The most common question I get (almost everyday) is about how I grew StyleandLatte on Instagram and what are the best tips for someone trying to grow. - Content: Of course, the no-brainer point! And yet this is the step many ignore at times. Your content is the driving force for your page, and should speak your mind. Whether its keeping the same preset on Lightroom, and/or using Planoly to preview posts before posting, it is quite important to make sure your posts flow well together. Most importantly, do not deviate! Just because a picture is pretty doesn’t mean you have to post it, especially if it derails from the actual theme of your page. The theme you put out determines the audience you attract.
- Follow people who inspire your page: That’s the first step! Take some time to figure out who inspire you – they can range from celebrities to major and/or micro influencers. Engage on their posts! This manipulates Instagram’s algorithm to figure out the kind of posts you want to flaunt and what you’d like to see more of.
- Engagement: So so important! This is the single most effective way to grow (eventually make money). Whether it’s liking and commenting right after your post went up, or doing it throughout the day — it’s crucial you engage and put yourself out there. I remember being briefly blocked for commenting too much on many occasions, but commenting on other people’s posts would get me a lot of followers. Also important — commenting back on comments posted on your post. This makes you look more interactive and shows you care!
- Visual appeal is key: Make your handle look as clean and organized as possible. I like to preview my posts to ensure symmetry and prevent two similar pictures next to each other. Another thing to ensure is the bio. It should be clean, and straight to the point.
- Stories: One of the important features of Instagram nowadays. It is important to keep posting stories throughout the day (let’s say slides every 30 minutes) in order to stay visible. On top of that, stories show personality, which posts lack. To grow as an influencer, its good to not be shy and be active on stories. Similarly, replying to others’ stories is also a great way to interact with other influencers.
- Know your audience: Think of your page as your store and your audience as consumers. You need to research on what they like, don’t like and even what they want to see more of. A lot of finding that is via trial and error. Couple of things to look at – the time you post and the type of posts that gets the highest engagement. Asking questions to your followers via stories is also a great option.
- Network with other influencers: Slide into DMs of other influencers, ask to meet for coffee and go to events you hear of. Remember, growing as an influencer takes work offline as well. Just like in any business, the network you build is crucial.
- Do fun collaborations with other influencers: One great idea is to host fun giveaways, so you can acquire followers who engage. Beware of the loop giveaways though (those do more harm than good). Trust me, last thing you want is to have 5k followers and only get 100 likes (I’ve seen it!).
- Build your resume: This pertains to another question I get a lot: “how can I get paid to post?” The initial stages of growth is when you make content to build your page. Get companies to gift your products and get as creative as you can with the content. Ask for feedback from them and see how you can improve. Remember, these free posts you make will attract the companies that are willing to pay you. And you need amazing work to showcase when they do.
- Be active on other mediums aside than your IG page: Whether it’s a website, Youtube channel, or simply a link to your affiliate page, its always a good idea to direct your audience somewhere else beyond Instagram.
- Get creative with your hashtags: Don’t use hashtags that are too common. Pay attention to local hashtags and/or anything special happening around you. Trending and community-based hashtags are always good.
- Ask yourself: the following questions every now and then: “Why do I have this page and what do I want out of this?” AND “How do people benefit from my page?”
- Be authentic and different: What do you have that’s unique to you? What are the most common trends/looks among your local influencers covering the same categories as you are? Find out what they are, and break away from them. Stand out, it’s mind blowing!
- And of course, last but not the least, be consistent: You will not grow if you are not consistent! Be patient, but put in the work. Remember, treat this as your business. If you don’t take your business seriously, you will fail. As easy as that!
