Be Chic on a Budget

Let’s face it. Fashion is like that pretty boy you want to impress, with never ending demands. And since you’ve fallen head over heels, you want to go that extra mile. Moment of silence before I move on….

Here at styleandlatte I’m a true advocate for being alright with a college student budget and still being a style icon. Because style is relative and personal.

Here are my favorite tips and tricks to being chic no matter what:

1. Find inspiration: When I’ve written an entire blogpost about it, it must be important! Inspiration can be found anywhere, and never has to be limited in any aspect. If abstract isn’t your thing then pick outfits worn by your style icon or even the well-dressed coworker at work!

2. Be confident: Confidence is the best outfit you can wear! I’m a huge advocate for it, since growing up that’s something I never had- but always aspired to have. Power stance, strong posture and an attitude that changes the world- congrats you have your foot through the door!

3. Key pieces. Looking at something for inspiration, specially an outfit, is like looking at the trees and then the forest. Pay attention to the key pieces. How can I swap things or get creative and get similar looks at the same time? Take for instance this French-inspired look (below). I combined three key pieces to make one look.  A lot like baking, same ingredients can make different products and the end product is never a direct reflection of the ingredients used.

4. Stick to basics: Basics are like your blank canvas, except your really don’t need to paint them all the time.  If you know me, you’ve probably figured out by now that I am a lover of minimalism. Basics bring on the versatility and varying personalities more than anything ‘uniquely eye-catching’ can. I mean let’s face it- how many times did you actually end up wearing that palm-print dress you bought last summer compared to that LBD you wear to so many different occasions without anyone noticing it’s the same piece? I like to proudly show you my hierarchy of needs when it comes to fashion:

basics clothing pieces -> good denim -> key footwear -> key jewelry and accessories (for me they’re my watch, bracelet and sunglasses!) -> crazy/ unique pieces currently trending.

5. Sunglasses and pretty hair. In other words look put together! If sunglasses are not an option, mascara takes you a long way! I never overdo my makeup, but simple makeup shows that you put an effort into yourself (if you have amazing glowy skin then lucky you! By all means just stick to mascara!)

Bottom line is, as I always say, chic is a state of mind. Nothing more than that. If you find your style and have the level of confidence to walk into a room full of people knowing you are what this world is missing – congrats you are beyond chic!

Hope this helps. And as always, be sure to enjoy that cup of coffee!
