The Art of Inspiration

“Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it where you find it.” – Bob Dylan

Style is exclusive to each individual. But the magic of dwelling in a world full of varying styles, inspiration becomes a strong resource in what and how we learn and create. Inspiration isn’t merely about imitation, it’s about understanding and reassigning. Like so many of us, it is a vital part of how I define my style. My thought process is easy, and goes something like this:

  • Wow I love his/her style!!
  • That is so nice, I love this look. Can I pull this off?
  • Of course, why not? But what do I have in my closet that will give off the same vibe/theme?
  • What part of this look inspires me. The exact outfit, color or particular way an item was used?
  • How do I put something similar together, that I am comfortable with and will look fantastic on my petite frame?
  • Wow I look good. Now let’s take a picture (#bloggerlife)!

Now, if you’ve successfully gone through my list – Congrats! You’ve officially learned how to get inspired!

Here are 3 celebrity outfits that I used as inspiration and recreated (with a touch of styleandlatte of course!):

1. Denim on denim. Miranda Kerr has a style that’s both comfortable and chic. I love that! And despite the fact that I’m half her height, I always go to her street style for inspiration.

This particular look is the poster child for comfort and chic. No brainer too – chambray shirt, light wash denim, leopard print and BAM! All done. Perfect opportunity to bring out my Leopard booties that I’ve been meaning to wear. Nothing beats 2 neutrals coming together to create one sophisticated outfit!

2. The following one adds life to boring office-wear, my favorite kind of look. I love adding colors and patterns over a neutral canvas. When I saw this particular Karlie Kloss look, I had to wear a similar outfit. Digging in, I found my trusted (leopard again!) pencil skirt and paired it with a bodysuit. Now I wanted to mix prints but I was only feeling one loud print, so I stuck to neutral top. Add a black coat and off to work!

3. You think I wasn’t going to add anything with lace? I love Chloe Sevigny’s style, so when I saw this off-duty look I was so excited.

The easiest part was to find a lace top. If you know me well, 1/3 of my closet consists of black lace. Pulled out a full sleeve collared lace shirt, my denim shorts and combat boots (the ones with added height of course!) and I was feeling like model off-duty (with 10″ of torso and legs missing).

Now that you’ve tapped into my brain, I’ll let you know another secret. My favorite places to find inspiration are from models off-duty and street photos. But that shouldn’t limit me or you. Inspiration is everywhere, and quite honestly, sometime they may not even be people. Go out, look around, be creative!!

And of course, enjoy your latte!
