Coffee Chat: How To Deal With Unwanted Change

Funny back story: I wrote this title down weeks go, during one of my (many) self-reflective moments. Little did I know that this would be a topic we’d all be contemplating on in a matter of days!

Change can be good or bad. Since we’re all pretty good at handling good changes, let’s focus on the latter. From unexpectedly losing someone dear to suddenly finding ways to change lifestyle in order to deal with a global pandemic– I’ve noticed how the negatives have interesting ways in shaping our lives. While the way we react to change and how we deal differ from person to person, there are certain ways that can apply to us all.

Reel your mind back: When shocked, our minds can wander or not be able to process things at their fullest capacities. Slow down, breath and make yours come back to you.

Break it down: This can typically follow once your mind is rewired. “What just happened? What now? The damage” or any other important questions your brain needs to process should be addressed. Ignoring certain aspects will come to haunt your at a later time, addressing the problem as a mere problem solving assignment lets us look at it stripped off the emotional aspect.

What’s the best mindset to have? Do you choose to fall into further darkness? Or prove the forces, and even yourself, wrong?

Make a plan: The coolest thing about us humans, is the ability to survive and grow. Instead of walking into things like a chicken with her head cut off, it is very helpful to sit and strategize. Keep in mind, baby steps and achievable goals are key.

Address how you feel: We talked about separating emotions, but don’t ever let them go unattended. This can be done in many ways–including talking to a friend or therapist, or simply writing it down.

Find something positive to take your mind off: Or briefly redirect your focus on to something else. It can be something as simply as cleaning or taking a walk to something more interactive like finding an easy hobby.

So there you have it, go deal with change being the strong person you are! The most important thing to remember when it comes to dealing with negative changes (and I may sound redundant)– is to believe that changes are here to shape us. As inevitable as they are, facing and growing from it make them somewhat worth it.
